The Pilgrimage Hajj – Tawaf and Its Method
Each Tawaaf Consists of seven Circumambulations around the Ka’aba The Method to be followed in Tawaaf is as follows:
After Making the Niyyat for Tawaaf, Come in front of Hajar-e-Aswad and Kiss it and of it is not possible to kiss it then point towards it and kiss the palms. Then raising your hands up to your ears recite this takbeer:
BIS-MIL-LAA-HI AL-LAA-HU AK-BAR WA LIL-LAA-HIL-HAMD.
In the name of Allah, Allah is the Most Great and Unto Allah Praise.
As you finish reciting, drop your hands and start moving for the first circumambulation. Each circumambulation starts from Hajar-e-Aswad and for each of these there is a special prayer, which should end at Rukn Yamaani ( you may be able to recite the prayer two or three times before your reach Rukn Yamaani). As you start from Rukn Yamaani towards Hajar-e-Aswad to start the next circumambulation, keep reciting the following Du’aa till your reach Hajar-e-Aswad:
RAB-BA-NAA AA-TI-NAA FID-DUN-YAA HA-SA-NA-TANW WA FIL-AA-KHI-RA-TI HA-SA-NA-TANW WA QI-NAA A-ZAA-BAN-NAAR WA AD-KHIL-NAL-JAN-NA-TA MA-AL-AB-RAAR YAA A-ZEE-ZU YAA GAF-FAA-RU YAA RAB-BAL AA-LA-MEEN
O’my Lord Allah! Bless us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good and save us from the torment of Fire and enter us in Paradise with the pious. O Mighty O Forgiver O Lord of the Universe.
Visit To Madina Munawwara – Masjid Nabawi
The Visit to Madina Munawwara – Masjid Nabawi Hadith: Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) has said, “The person who visits my grave, his intercession becomes wajib on me.”
Hadith: In another tradition Allah’s Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) has said, “let him who can die in Madina, for I shall intercede for those who die in it.” (Ahmed, Tirmizi Sharif)
Hadith: Here is on more tradition: “The terror of the Antichrist (Dajjal) will not enter Madina. That day it will have seven gates with two angels at each gate.” (Bukhari Sharif)
Hadith: Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, “O Allah, put in Madina twice as much blessings as Thou has put in Makka.” (Bukhari Sharif, Muslim Sharif)
Hadith: Allah’s Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) has said, “He who purposely comes to visit me will be under my protection on the Day of Resurrection; he who lives in Madina and endures its difficulty will have me as a witness and intercessor on the Day of Resurrection; and he who dies in one of the two sacred territories will be raised by Allah on the Day of Resurrection among those who will be safe.” (Baihaqi)
Hadith: Allah’s Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) has said, “He who performs the pilgrimage and visits my grave after my death will be like him who visited me in my lifetime.” (Baihaqi)
Hadith: Allah’s Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) has said, “ The last hour will not come before Madina drives away its wicked people as the bellows drives away the impurity of iron.” (Muslim Sharif)
You should pass your journey to Madina Munawwara with excessive recitation of Darood Sharif, Astagfaar and Prayers. When you reach Madina Munawwara, after keeping your baggage safely, take a bath or perform wudu, put on a good dress, use some perfume and reciting Darood Sharif, proceed to Masji-e-Nabvi, also known as Haram Sharif. You should bear in mind that you are going to call at the Greatest person on earth, our best guide and beloved Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). He sees you when you face him and responds to salaam which you offer him. Our every act against Islam and disobedience shocks him as a patron. The great oriental philosopher poet Allama Iqbal once prayed:
O my Lord Allah give me whatever penalty on my sins, but show not the record of my evil deeds to my beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam), as he will be shocked and his heart will break.

O Allah save me from Thy punishment on the Day Thou resurrect Thy Servant. O my Lord Allah, grant me Paradise unexamined.
The Pilgrimage – What After Hajj?
Return from Mina to Makkah Mukarrama on 12th or 13th afternoon. Now your Hajj is complete. According to Hadis, whosoever performed Hajj solely for Allah and did not resort to any lewdness of abuse, he returns from Hajj as innovent and sinless as he was on the day he was born. All your past sins are forgiven and you are like a newly born baby. You are entering into a new phase of life. You should not forget the Benevolence of Allah, Who selected you from among the millions of Muslims and honoured you with the visit of His Holy House, the Abode of Prophets. You should not forget the promises made by you in Arafat to lead a pious life. Now you are will aware of your responsibilities. If yo will commit sins again, it will not only degrade you but also reflect on the whole society. After Hajj you should devote your maximum time to prayers in Makkah Mukarrama.
Nafl Umrah may be performed for your parents, relatives, teachers and offspring, dead or alive. In order to perform Nafl Umrah you have to perform Guls, then taking your Ahram you go to Masjid-e-Ayesha. There you put on the Ahram, offer two raka’at Nafl of Umrah and then come back to Haram Sharif and perform Tawaaf (with Iztibah and Ramal), Saee and Halaq. Make intention for Umrah in the flowing words:
AL-LAA-HUM-MA IN-NEE U-REE-DUL UM-RAH——–FA-YAS-SIR-HAA-LEE WA TA-QAB-BAL-HAA MIN-NEE——- WAA-IN-NEE A-LAI-HAA WA BAA-RIK-LEE FEE-HAA NAVAI-TUL UM-RA-TA WA AH-RAMTU BI-HAA LIL-LAA-HI TA-AA-LAA
O Allah! I have made the intention to perform Umrah, easen it for me and accept it from me and help me (to perform it) and make it full of blessings for me. I make the intention for Umrah and with it I have put on the Ahram for the sake of Allah Ta’ala.
Similarly, Nafl Tawaaf may be performed for them. At least one full recitation of Qur’aan may be completed during this period. Nafl Namaaz may also be offered for yourself. Be particular for five times Namaaz. (Do not forget that one Namaaz offered in Haram is equal to one hundred thousand Namaaz offered elsewhere).
The Tawaaf of Arrival to Makkah
The first thing after reaching Makkah is to perform the Tawaaf of Arrival (for persons performing Hajj-e-Ifrad) or Umrah (for persons performing Hajj-e-Tamatt’u). If you have to perform Umrah then observe Iztibah (to take one end of the Ahram’s upper sheet from under the right armpit and drop it over the left shoulder) and Ramal (to walk with hastened pace moving the shoulders, in the first three circumambulations) in Tawaaf. If you are performing Umrah, then you also have to perform Sa’ee and Halaq (for persons performing Hajj-e-Tamatt’u).
When you reach a bit to the left of Hajjar-e-Aswad, stay there and intend for performing Tawaaf. The intention should be made in the following words:
AL-LAA-HUM-MA IN-NEE UREE-DU TA-WAA-FA BAI-TI-KAL HA-RAA-MI FA-YAS-SIR-HU LEE WA TA-QAB-BAL-HU MIN-NEE SAB-A-TA ASH-WAA-TIN LIL-LAA-HI TA-AA-LAA AZ-ZA WA JAL
In the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful. O Allah! I intend to perform Tawaaf (of Hajj or Umrah or only Tawaaf) of Thy Sacred House. Hence easen it for me and accept it from me. The Tawaaf of seven circuits, for Almighty Allah the Dignified.
After intention move towards right and reach in front of the Hajjar-e-Aswad and then raising the two hands up to earlobes say: In the name of Allah. If it is difficult to reach the Hajar-e-Aswad without pushing other persons, then raise the hands, palms facing Hajar-e-Aswad and then kiss the two palms saying the above words. Then you walk slowly, calmly and humbly towards Baab-e-Ka’aba and Hateem circuiting the Holy Ka’aba and reciting the prayers of praise and glory of Allah.
Before Starting Journey to the Blessed Pilgrimage – Hajj
Before leaving for the journey for Hajj, make your conscience feel that you are going for Hajj because Allah the Almighty is pleased with you and has paved the way for you to perform Gusl and wear the Ahram clothes. Perform Wudu and offer these Nafl Namaaz:
- 2 raka’at Shukrana Nafl.
- 2 raka’at Nafl-e-Tauba.
- 2 raka’at Nafl-e-Haajaat.
- 2 raka’at Nafl-e-Safar,
- 2 raka’at Nafl with the intention of Umrah Ahram.
Give alms (sadaqa) and request your neighbors, friends and relatives to excuse you for your shortcomings and misbehavior towards them.
ON BOARD THE SHIP OR PLANE
When the ship or plane is about to leave, recite the following du’aa:
BIS-MIL-LAA-HI MAJ-REE-HAA WA MUR-SA-HAA IN-NA RAB-BEE LA GA-FOO-RUR-RA-HEEM
In the name of Allah be its course on carriage or landing. Verily my Lord is forgiving and merciful.
During the journey keep reciting Al-laa-hu Ak-bar or the following du’aa:
SUB-HAA-NAL-LA-ZEE SAKH-KHARA LA-NAA HAA-ZAA WA MAA KUN-NAA LA-HOO MUQ-RI-NEE-NA WA IN-NAA I-LAA RAB-BI-NAA LA-MUN-QA-LI-BOON
Now do the Niyyat that O Allah I am entering Ahram. This is formulated by pronouncing Talbiyah, i.e. Lab-baik Al-laa-hum-ma Lab-baik, 3 times loudly. Women should pronounce this softly. Once you enter Ahram, it becomes imperative for a person to complete his Umrah of Hajj for which he had done Niyyat.
Once you enter ahram you also have to follow the restrictions of Ahram.
RESTRICTIONS OF AHRAM
- Do not apply perfume, do not eat or drink anything with strong smell.
- Do not cut nails or uproot hair.
O Allah This sanctuary is Thy sanctuary. And that of Thy Prophet. Forbid my flesh, bones and blood to the fire of Hell. O my Lord Allah, I beseech Thee to secure me from Thy torment. On the day Resurrect Thy slaves Thou Verily Thou art Allah and there is no god save Thee.
The Most Benevolent and Merciful. After entering Makkah Mukarrama and leaving your luggage at the place of your stay, perform Gusl if possible or even Wudu will suffice, and then proceed to Haram Sharif. Enter the Haram Sharif with your right foot first through Baabus-Salaam (and keep your eyes lowered and do not raise them till you are right in front of the Ka’aba) and recite this du’aa:
BIS-MIL-LAA-HI WAL-HAM-DU-LIL-LAA-HI WAS-SA-LAA-TU WAS SA-LAA-MU A-LAA RA-SOO-LIL-LAA-HI SAL-LAL-LAA-HU A-LAI-HI WA SAL-LAM
In the name of Allah, Praise be to Allah and Blessings and Peace on the Messenger of Allah, on whom be Peace and Blessings.
AL-LAA-HUM-MAT-TAH-LEE AB-WAA-BA RAH-MA-TI-KA WA MAG-FI RA-TI-KA WAD-KHIL-NEE FEE-HAA
O Allah open upon me the door of Thy Mercy and Forgiveness and grant me to enter in this Haram.
BIS-MIL-LAA-HI DA-KHAL-TU WA A-LAI-HI TA-WAK-KAL-TU WA NA-WAI-TU SUN-NA-TALI’-TI-KAAF
In the name of Allah I am entering (Thy House) and with faith’ on Thee and with intention of Sunnatul I’tikaaf (attending in Thy House, paths shown by Allah’s Messenger – Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam).
The first glance of the Ka’aba is very important because it is the time for the acceptance of prayers. Therefore, be particular, to beseech Allah at this time for the betterment of yourself, your family members, your relatives, your friends, your acquaintances, in this world as well as the Hereafter, and recite this dua’aa particularly:
AL-LAA-HU AK-BAR ——AL-LAA-HU AK-BAR ——AL-LAA-HU AK-BAR ——LAA-I-LAA-HA IL-LAL-LAA-HU WAL-LAA-HU AK-BAR
Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great. There is no god but Allah. Allah is Most Great.
This is the time for the acceptance of prayer.
