11th Zil Hajj – The Fourth Day

Devote the stay of Mina to praying and praising Allah. It is obligatory to pass the night of 10th and 11th Zil Hajj in Mina and to perform Rami of the three Jamrat on 11th and 12th Zil Hajj after Zawaal. For Rami, go to Jamrat with more than twenty-one pebbles, Strike seven pebbles on 1st Jamrah reciting the prayer mentioned before and then stay facing Ka’aba near it for five minutes praying for your welfare, then proceed to second Jamrah, strike seven pebbles and stay a few meter ahead from Jamrah for five minute prayer and then proceed to the last Jamrah i.e. Jamrat al-Uqbah, strike seven pebbles and return to your camp without staying or praying after it. For ladies and old persons it is allowed to perform the Rami even after sunset on 11th and 12th Zil Hajj otherwise it is makrooh.


The Rami on 10th should be performed before Zawaal. It is sunset. But it is makrooh after sunset and forbidden after the dawn of 11th then a blood sacrifice is due to him as a penalty, which is known as Dum.

The time of Rami on 11th, 12th and 13th starts from Zawaal to sunset, from sunset to next dawn it is makrooh and forbidden after the dawn of next day. If a person could not perform it in the prescribed time, then a Dum is Wajib.

NAHAR. The sacrifice of animal for Tamattu and Qiran Hajj should be performed from the dawn of 10th to the sunset of 12th Zil Hajj, within the Haram territory preferably in Mina. If a person did it after this period or outside the Haram territory then a dum will be Wajib.

HALAQ. The head shaving or hair shortening should be performed from dawn of the 10th to the sunset of 12th within the Haram territory. Performing it after the prescribed period or outside the Haram territory will be subjected to a Dum. To perform Rami, Nahar and Halaq in the same order is also wajib. If a person performed Halaq before Nahar or Rami after Halaq then a Dum will be wajib.

To return to Makkah Mukarrama from Mina after the Rami of 12th is allowed but it is better to return after performing the Rami of 13th Zil Hajj in similar way. If a person intends to leave Mina on 12th then he should leave it before sunset. Departure from Mina on 12th after sunset is makrooh. If a person stayed in Mina up to the dawn of 13th Zil Hajj, then it is obligatory on him to perform the Rami after Zawaal of 13th Zil Hajj.

Start from Muzdalifa before sunrise and reach Mina in forenoon to perform the rites. After reaching Mina keep your baggage etc. safely in your cam and start to perform the rites, strictly in the following order.

Without long rest in the camp, rust to strke seven pebbles on the third Jamrah known as Jamrat Al-Uqba (Big Shaitaan) before Zawaal. For ladies and weak persons, it is allowed to perform Rami up to sunset, otherwise Makrooh. Throw the pebbles on by one, and raising the right hand. Discontinue the Talbiya with the first pebble on Jamrah. Recite the following prayer when throwing the pebbles on the Jamrah:


In the name of Allah. Allah the Most Great, I strike the pebbles to Satan to secure the pleasure of Beneficent O my Lord Allah make my Hajj accepted and my sins forgiven and my endeavor honoured.


After returning from Jamrah, go to Mazbah for sacrificing an animal. For a person (men or women) performing Tamattu or Qiran Hajj, it is obligatory to sacrifice a sheep or goat or one-seventh share in a camel or cow. It is not required from persons performing Ifrad Hajj. You can take the meat from your sacrifice for your use, this is Sunnat. The capable persons should sacrifice for your use, this is Sunnat. The capable persons should sacrifice separatelyfor Idul-Ad-haa as they do in their country but it is not applicable to the persons offering Qasr Namaaz in Makka Mukarrama.


After sacrifice you can put off the Ahram of Hajj by Halaq, i.e. by shaving the head or shortening the hair as already described under Umrah. Women should cut their lock about an inch to put off the Ahram. Now you are free of Ahram restrictions and can use your normal dress and perfumes, etc. However, the husband-wife relationship is still not allowed, unless you perform Tawaaf-e-Ziyarat.


It is better to perform this Tawaaf on 10th Zil Hajj but it can be performed up to Magrib of 12th Zil Hajj. Go to Makkah Mukarrama on the 10th afternnon and perform a usual Tawaaf-e-Sadr, return from Makkah Mukarrama to pass at least two nights in Mina. This is a Sunnat. If you have put off Ahram  beforecoming to Makkah Mukarrama then Iztibah and Ramai are not required


After Tawaaf of Ziyarat, perform a usual Saee with particular intention of Saee of Hajj. Saee may be performed without Ahram. In case you have completed Saee of Hajj before Vaqoof of Arafat then no Saee is required now.

The Second Day 9th Zil Hajj Yaum-e-Vaqoof or Yaum-e-Arafa

It is called Yavm-eVaqoof or Yaum-e-Arafa. This is the main day of Hajj. You pack up you luggage for passing an afternoon in Arafat and night in the open plain of Muzdalifa.

One blanket, dry food, water-can and prayer booklets are the essentials of this journey. Start from Mina after sunrise, preferably after offering Ishraq Namaaz in Masjid-e-Khaif.

The distance from Mina to Arafat via Muzdalifa is about five miles which may be covered on foot, and that is better. You can use a vehicle also. Reach Arafat before mid-day for Vaqoof, which is Sunnat. Take rest before noon in your camp. When Zawaal sets in, you may go to Masjid-e-Namrah, attend the Khutba, which is recited before the combined Namaaz of Zuhar and Asr. After the Khutba, two raka’at Zuhar Farz are offered with Jamaat and then the Imam leads the prayers for two raka’at Farz of Asr with another Takbeer.

If you are not going to Masjid-e-Namrah, then offer the Zuhar and Asr Namaaz separately in your tent at their respective times. As there are many chances of getting lost in Arafat, it is better to offer your prayers in your tent.

From the Fajr Namaaz of 9th Zil Hajj till the Asr Namaaz of 13th Zil Hajj, say takbeer after every Namaaz:


This is a very important day. Do not talk unnecessarily. Do lots of du’aa. Do Zikr. Recite the first, third and fouth Kalima.
Recite 100 times Astagfaar,
100 times fourth Kalima,
100 times Surah Ikhlas with Bis-mil-lah.
Do lot of du’aa. In between du’aa recite Lab-baik.

Halting and standing in Arafat is the foremost Hajj rite, so much so that Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is reported to have said, “Hajj is halting in Arafat.” (Tirmizi Sharif)

On this day when hundreds of thousands of people, clad in similar humble robes, stand in th plain of Arafat as pictures of humility and devotion, In the Presence of Allah the Almighty, they indeed, for a short while, represent the scene of the Day of Rising, when all worldly distinctions will be leveled down and everyone will be awaiting and standing in awe of the Devine Verdict.

If a person is not able to reach Arafat on the 9th of Zil Hajj or any time during the day or night, and stand there even for a little while, he will not be considered to have performed Hajj at all. If any of the other devotional acts like Tawaaf, Saee, Rami, etc. are missed, they can be recompensed, but there is no recompense for one’s absence from Arafat. The longer the halt in Arafat, the better it is. The pilgrim should stand there with the presence and remember that he is totally dependent on the Mercy of Allah for deliverance, and that this is the only and perhaps the last opportunity for him to beg and implore him for forgiveness. The pilgrim should therefore realize he importance of each moment of his stay in Arafat. Stressing the importance of excellence of halting in Arafat, Allah’s Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said, “There is no other day on which Allah relieves more people from Hell-fire than He does on the Day of Arafat. On this day Allah draws nearest to the people and taking pride in His righteous servants, asks the angels, “Do you see what they desire?” (Muslim Sharif)

During the halt in the Plain of Arafat, one should constantly keep one’s whole attention turned towards Allah and make supplications to Him as often as once can. Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said, “The best of supplications is the one made in Arafat.” Start for Muzdalifa after sunset in Arafat without offering the Magrib Namaaz. This will be offered with Isha Namaaz in Muzdalifa. If a person leaves Arafat territory before sunset, then a Dum is wajib on him and he should sacrifice one sheep or goat as a penalty. But it he returns before sunset, nothing is wajib.

After keeping your baggage safely in Muzadlifa, offer the combined Magrib and Isha Namaaz with Jamaat, preferably in Masjid Masharil Haraam. The blanket, dry food and water brought from Arafat is required in Muzdalifa as about a million people pass this night in the open and barren plain of Muzdalifa.

The Night of Masharil Haraam is a very virtuous night. Therefore pass this Night with full prayers and devotion. Practically, the people reach Muzdalifa two or three hours after sunset. You may take rest for 2-3 hours after Isha Namaaz and then get up for Tahajjud and other prayers till the time of Fajr. When the time of Fajr starts, offer the Fajr and observe Vaqoof of Muzdalifa reciting Darood, Astagfaar and other prayers, preferably near Jabal Qazah. The time limit of Vaqoof of Muzdalifa is from dawn to sunrise on tenth of Zil Hajj. Do lots of du’aa. In between du’aa recite Lab-baik. You should start from Muzdalifa to Mina only when few minutes remain for sunrise. To start before dawn from Muzdalifa is not allowed except for old, weak persons and women, for fear of rush. Also collect from Muzdalifa approximately 70 pebbles so as to pelt (7+21+21) 49 peasized pebbles for Rami Jamar.

THE THIRD DAY OF HAJJ (10th Zil Hajj) Return in Mina After gathering pebbles in Muzdalifah and after offering Fajr prayer before sunrise return to Mina and do following after being there:

FIRST TASK Hit Seven Pebbles To Jumra Kabira (Biggest Satan).. On the locations where satan made a failure attempts to misdirect Hazrat Ibrahim Khalil ul Allah (Friend of Allah), on those places three pillars have been constructed for identification. These are called satan in public language. Take seven pebbles out of those pebbles which you have brought from Muzdalifah to hit the biggest satan. As a precautionary measure take additional one or two pebbles in case of a pebble is missed to hit satan, so in the place of it you can hit another one. Do not pick up a pebble from ground as it is accursed (mardood). Leave first two Jumrat and come in front of the largest Jumra. Stand at the distance of 3-4 feet and hit pebble one by one. Hold the pebble with the thumb and forefinger (shahadat ki ungli) and after reading the following takbeer hit the pebble: bismillahi llahu akbar wa lillahil hamd

Hit every pebble in the root of pillar in such a way that pebble fell in a cistern which is made around the pillar. If you will throw a pebble directly on pillar it will fall far from pillar and another pebble is required to be thrown in place of it. Do not say anything absurd while throwing the pebbles.

REMEMBER — It is wajib(must do) on every pilgrim to hit pebbles himself. If any pilgrim assigns another pilgrim to hit pebbles in his place then his wajib(must do) will remain, for the compensation of which a dam(sacrificing an goat or a sheep within the boundaries of Makkah) is

required. Extremely weak and feeble people can hit pebbles in the night after dawn. Only extremely disabled, blind, people bereaved from legs and hands can assign others to hit pebbles in their place.

SECOND TASK To Sacrifice.. For the pilgrims of Hajj Qiran and Hajj Tamattu, it is the responsibility to perform second task of hajj that is to sacrifice. This sacrifice of hajj is called “Dum Shukar.” You have to sacrifice with the same intention. However, pilgrims who perform hajj Ifraad are not responsible to sacrifice but it is mustahib for them which mean if they can afford then sacrifice.

THIRD TASK To Shave or Clip The Hair.. After hitting pebbles to the biggest satan and sacrificing the third task is to shave or clip the hair of head on 10th zil hajj. After this all the restrictions are finished which were imposed while you wore ehram. However, husband wife cannot get involve in physical relationship unless they do “Tawaf-e-Zayarat”.

FOURTH TASK Performing Tawaf e Ziyarat.. The fourth work on 10th zil hajj is to perform “Tawaf-e-Ziyarat”. This Tawaf-e-Ziyarat is a very important rukn (ritual) of Hajj. For this tawaf you are required to come to Makkah Mukarama in your routine dress after hitting pebbles to Jumra Kabira, sacrificing, and shaving or clipping the hair of your head. The most preferred time for Tawaf-e-Ziyarat is 10th zil hajj but if someone could not perform this tawaf-e-ziyarat on 10th zil hajj then he must do it before sunset of 12th zil hajj. If 12th zil hajj passed and tawaf-e-ziyarat was not performed then due to delay to give “dum” (sacrificing animal within the boundaries of Makkah) will remain wajib (must-do) and tawaf will remain an obligation.

TAWAF E ZIYARAT is neither elapsed in any case nor can it be compensated. Its performance remains an obligation till the end of life. Unless tawaf-e-ziyarat is performed restrictions regardinghusband and wife remain imposed. All the restrictions which were haram during ehram are halal now.

Sayee after Tawaf-e-Ziyarat.. Since, before Waqoof-e-Arafat you performed the Sayee of Umrah and not of Hajj, so after Tawaf-e-Ziayarat Sayee of Safa Marwa is wajib (must-do) on you. This sayee will be performed without ehram in your daily cloths and you will not cut hair after this as you have already cut hair after sacrifice and ehram ends before this. After getting free, you go to Mina again. It is sunnat to stay in Mina after Tawaf-e-Ziyarat and one should not unnecessarily stay in Makkah. However, if the time of prayer is near then after offering prayer in Masjid Haram return to Mina as soon as possible. The time of stay in Mina is of the remembrance of Allah, prayers of forgiveness to Allah, reading Darood sharif excessively and this time should not be spent heedlessly.

The Second Day of Hajj (9th Zil Hajj) Yaum-e-Arfa On 9th zil hajj, after dawn you have to move towards “Arafat.” It is allowed to move towards Arafat in night because of crowd. It will be afternoon to reach Arafat. The time of Waqoof-e-Arafat (to stop in Arafat) starts after sunset. Remember to gather in the ground of Arafat on 9th zil hajj is the most important rukn (ritual) of Hajj. If a pilgrim performed each and every rukn of hajj but did not stop in Arafat after sunset on 9th zil hajj till sunrise on 10th zil hajj in Arafat, his hajj will not be done. That is why; each and every moment of this rukn (ritual) of hajj should be spent with great preparation. While going to Arafat from Mina and while staying in Arafat, read talbiyah, darood shareef, and fourth Kalima, which Holy Prophet Muhammad S.A.W read as well as recommended to read, as much as possible. As soon as you see “Jabl-e-Rehamt” after reaching Arafat, read the following tasbeeh o tahleel o takbeer: subhanallahi wal hamdulilahi wala ilaha illallahu wallahuakbar. And pray whatever you want. Jabl-e-rehmat is the mountain on which Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) addressed the Khutba Hijjat ul Wida. If easily possible then take bath with the intention of Waqoof-e-Arfa after sunset in Arafat ground but if there is no such opportunity then do ablution.

Then in Masjid Namra which is in Arafat ground, the Imam on 9th zil hajj will pray for Dhuhr and Asr together at the time of Dhuhr because today it is the command of Allah to offer two prayers together. Firstly, imam will offer fard of Dhuhr and immediately after it will offer fard of Asr. Those pilgrims who are offering prayer behind the imam will offer these two prayers together. But because of intense crowd, it is difficult to reach Masjid Namra and then to return back to camp. So, those pilgrims who are offering prayers alone or offering separately in a group are required to offer Dhuhr at the time of Dhuhr and Asr at the time of Asr. As the time of waqoof-e-arafat is very precious, so, after offering Dhuhr prayer, stand in the direction of Qibla and pray for forgiveness to Allah, praise Allah (hamd o sana), pray to Allah, read darood shareef, and read talbiyah. This act should be continued. After Asr prayer till the time of sunset pray in the court of Allah in an extreme humble manner for you and your parents, relatives and friends, and the whole Muslim nation because it is the special time of acceptance of prayers. If you cannot stand for long then you can sit and pray. Those who are weak and ill can pray while sitting.


Departure To Muzdalifah From Arafat.. Without offering Maghrib prayer move to Muzdalifah from Arafat when sun sets. It takes a long time to reach Muzdalifah. Any time you reach Muzdalifah, the first work you have to do is to offer prayer of Maghrib and Isha’a together at the time of Isha’a in Muzdalifah. Either offer it alone or offer in a group or in the guidance of ameer-ul hajj. The method is that; whichever place you stay in Muzdalifah, call to prayer first, then say Takbeer, and then after offering fard of Maghrib and Isha’a, first offer sunnat of Maghrib, then sunnat of Isha’a, and finally witr. For these two prayers say one call of prayer and one takbeer. This night you have to spend in Muzdalifah under open sky. This night is very beatific. There remains raining of Allah’s light throughout the night.So, it is better to rest for a while after offering Maghrib and Isha’a and then get busy in adoration of Allah. Since it is the night of acceptance of prayers so the whole night pray to Allah for forgiveness, blessings, and benevolence for you, your family, parents, relatives and friends, and for blessing and good of the whole Muslim nation. There is one more important work to do in Muzdalifah. This is to gather seventy pebbles from Muzdalifah. These pebbles should be equivalent in size to bean or to the seed of date. These should not be so big in size. These will be of use to hit Jumrat in Mina for three days. After offering Fajr and praying to Allah in Muzdalifah depart for Mina before sunrise having pebbles with you.

The days from 8th Zil Hajj to 12th Zil Hajj are called Ayam-e-Hajj (days of Hajj).

The First Day of Hajj (8th Zil Haj) Yaum-al-Tarwiah

Ehram and Intention.. generally, on 8th zil hajj determinants of hajj start to move towards Mina early in the morning after offering fajr prayer. So, on 8th zil hajj ehram for hajj is wore in Makkah Mukarama. (Because of crowd, it is fine to wear ehram on 7th zil hajj and move towards Mina). It is preferred to wear the ehram of hajj from Masjid Haram and offer two nafal with the intention of ehram of hajj. Read Surah Al kafiroon in first rakat and Surah Al ikhlas in second rakat as it is preferred. However, other surah can also be recited. Pray to Allah after offering nafal. Intend for hajj after reading the following prayer in heart:allahumma inni yuridul hajja fayasiruhuli wataqabbalahu minniI intend to perform Hajj; make it easy for me and accept it from me.” Read talbiyah after intending for hajj: Labaik allahumma labaik,labaik la sharikalak labaik,innal hamd wan naymata lakaval mulk ,la sharikalak

Here I am O Allah, (in response to Your call), here I am. Here I am. You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.Now, the ehram of hajj has started and the same restrictions are imposed on you which were imposed during the ehram of Umrah.

Five Prayers in Mina.. after wearing the ehram of hajj, you will go to Mina on 8th zil hajj. It is sunnat to offer 5 prayers in Mina today which means Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, isha’a of 8th zil hajj and Fajr of 9th zil hajj. Remain busy in remembrance of Allah, offering nawafil, reading darood pak, and reciting Holy Quran during other time. Try to offer some prayers in Masjid Khaif because according to some sayings seventy thousands Prophets (A.S) has offered prayers in this Masjid. This is the masjid of Mina and according to some sayings, seventy thousand Prophets (A.S) buried here.
